MADIS Surface Network Information

Data files of surface observations from the following networks are available from ESRL/GSD's Meteorological Assimilation Data Ingest System (MADIS).

"AFA" is operated by the U.S. Air Force Academy.

"AKDOT" is operated by the Alaska Department of Transportation.

"AK-Meso" is provided from networks operated by various agencies, including the U.S. Army's Fort Greely.

"APG" is provided by the U.S. Army's Aberdeen Proving Grounds.

"APRSWXNET" is a public service weather network of amateur radio operators and private citizens operating home weather stations. "ARLFRD" is provided by the NOAA Air Resources Laboratory/Field Research Division.

"CAIC" is collected by the Colorado Avalanche Information Center from its own network as well as those operated by:

"CoCoRaHS" is provided by volunteers participating in the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network..

"CODOT" is operated by the Colorado Department of Transportation.

"CO_E-470" is operated by the Colorado E-470 Public Highway Authority.

"CWOP-snow" is a private-public partnership with the goals of collecting weather data contributed by citizens and making these data available for weather services and research activities.

"DCNet" is operated by the NOAA Air Resources Laboratory.

"DDMET/GPSMET" is operated by ESRL/GSD. The "GPSMET" label is used when referring to the GPS integrated water vapor and associated variables, the "DDMET" label is used for the conventional surface meteorological observations.

"FLDOT" is operated by the University of North Florida for the Florida Department of Transportation.

"FL-Meso" consists of stations from the Florida Automated Weather Network (FAWN) run by the University of Florida. "FTCOLLINS" is operated by the city of Fort Collins, CO as part of their Flood Warning System. Data collected by the Denver/Boulder NWS Forecast Office.

"GADOT" is operated by the Georgia Department of Transportation.

"GLDNWS" is collected by the Goodland, KS NWS Forecast Office.

"GLOBE" is operated by the GLOBE program.

"GoMOOS" is operated by the Gulf of Maine Ocean Observing System.

"GPSMET/DDMET" is operated by ESRL/GSD. The "GPSMET" label is used when referring to the GPS integrated water vapor and associated variables, the "DDMET" label is used for the conventional surface meteorological observations.

"HADS" is collected by the NWS Office of Hydrologic Development. Currently, only a subset of the HADS stations are included in MADIS.

"IEM" is collected by the Iowa Environmental Mesonet from networks operated by KCCI-TV, KELO-TV, and KIMT-TV.

"INDOT" is operated by the Indiana Department of Transportation.

"INTERNET" is collected by the Denver/Boulder NWS Forecast Office from networks operated by various agencies including

"KSDOT" is operated by the Kansas Department of Transportation. This spreadsheet contains the locations (e.g., lane direction, bridge) of the pavement sensors as of January 2008.

"KYTC-RWIS" is operated by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

"LSU-JSU" is collected by the Louisiana State University Ag Center and includes networks operated by the Louisiana Agriclimatic Information System (LAIS), the Mississippi Mesonet operated by Jackson State University, and the mesonet operated by the University of South Alabama.

"Maritime" is a collection of ship, buoy, and coastal reports supplied by Environment Canada, NOAA's National Data Buoy Center, and other organizations.

"MAP" is a collection of surface observations measured at the locations of the profilers in the MADIS Multi-Agency Profiler (MAP) dataset.

"MDDOT" is operated by the Maryland Department of Transportation.

"MEDOT" is operated by the Maine Department of Transportation.

"MesoWest" is operated by the University of Utah and the NOAA Cooperative Institute for Regional Prediction. (Please see their disclaimer and list of mesonets providers).

"METAR" is a network of surface observations supplied by NOAA's National Weather Service and other meteorological services around the world that meet standards developed by the World Meteorological Organization. We update incorrect METAR locations based in part on user input. So, if you notice a misplaced station please notify us. If you notice a station that appears to be producing erroneous data, please notify the ASOS Operations and Monitoring Center (AOMC).

"MISC" is collected from various sources, currently including

"MNDOT" is operated by the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

"MOComAgNet" is operated by the University of Missouri.

"NC-ECONet" is operated by the State Climate Office of North Carolina.

"NDDOT" is operated by the North Dakota Department of Transportation.

"NEDOR" is operated by the Nebraska Department of Roads.

"NERRS" is collected by the NWS Office of Hydrologic Development from stations operated by the NOS Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management and its local partners.

"NHDOT" is operated by the New Hampshire Department of Transportation.

"NJWxNet" is collected by the Office of the New Jersey State Climatologist at Rutgers, the State University from its own networks, and from the U.S. Forest Service Pine Barrens Fire Weather RAWS stations.

"NonFedAWOS" consists of data from AWOS weather stations at various airports collected by the following organizations:

"NOS-NWLON" consists of stations from the National Water Level Observation Network (NWLON) run by the NOAA National Ocean Service.

"NOS-PORTS" consists of stations from the Physical Oceanographic Real-Time System (PORTS) run by the NOAA National Ocean Service.

"NWS-COOP" consists of automated stations from the National Weather Service Cooperative Observer Program (aka NERON)

"OHDOT" is operated by the Ohio Department of Transportation.

"OK-Meso" refers to the Oklahoma Mesonet run by the Oklahoma Climatological Survey. Site and network information is available, as well as information on publications, data products, and plug-in software.

PCDINPE consists of stations from the Plataformas de Coleta de Dados (Data Collection Platforms) network operated by the Centro de Previsão de Tempo e Estudos Climáticos (Center for Weather Forecasts and Climate Studies) at the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (Institute for Space Research) which is part of the Ministério da Ciência e Tecnologia (Ministry of Science and Technology) of Brazil.

"RAWS" is operated by the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, ID. Data collected by the Denver/Boulder NWS Forecast Office.

"RDMTR" is a collection of surface observations measured at the locations of the radiometers in the MADIS upper-air Radiometer dataset. The data is supplied by: the DOE Atmospheric Radiation Measurement program, and by the Radiometrics Corporation.

"SAO" is collected by Environment Canada.

"SFWMD" is operated by the South Florida Water Management District.

"SRWMD" is operated by the Suwannee River Water Management District.
